As part of our Grade 7 novel study on The Cay – a story about a white boy named Phillip who becomes blind after an injury and is cared for by a Black Caribbean man named Timothy – we invited a representative from the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) to speak at our school. Our guest, Bernard, a specialist in education advocacy, delivered an insightful presentation to our students and staff on topics such as blindness etiquette, lived experiences, common misconceptions and stereotypes, Braille literacy, assistive technologies, and the use of different types of canes and adaptive tools. The session was highly engaging and provided our students with a meaningful opportunity to learn directly from someone with lived experience, deepening their understanding of blindness and inclusion.
