Course Instructor: Sayyid Ali Imran
In this short course, we will explore the subject of singing, music and musical instruments in Islam to help Muslim educators teaching and working in Islamic schools navigate the issue better. The lessons will cover the history of how music as a discipline entered the Muslim world after the demise of the Prophet (p), and in particular focus on the discourse that occurred in the Abbasid era over singing and music as reflected in the Shi’i hadith tradition. A number of narrations condemning singing and music will be analyzed and opinions of Shi’i scholars as well as other contributors to the Islamic civilization will be summarized. Reasons for why Muslim parents request exemption for their children from music classes in public schools – a well-known phenomenon in the West – will be looked at in light of the opinions of a few contemporary jurists and certain examples will be used as case studies to determine if and how the criterion for impermissibility applies to them.
