Our Grade 5 students visited the Rouge Valley Conservation Centre to explore how energy exists and flows in the natural world. They learned how trees capture sunlight through photosynthesis, how rocks store geothermal heat deep within the Earth, and how insects and reptiles utilize sunlight and their own body temperature to regulate their energy.
Students also compared the pros and cons of different energy sources, such as solar, wind, hydropower, biofuels, and fossil fuels and discussed how each affects the environment. During the Global Warming Hike, they observed how climate change is impacting local plants and animals and reflected on simple ways to conserve energy, like turning off lights, saving water, and reducing waste. The trip was a meaningful way to connect classroom learning to the natural world and inspired students to think about using energy wisely for a sustainable future.
