We studied this poem with our middle school students at the end of the year. Students were introduced to the concept of a Hashiyah or a Ta’liqah, which are marginal notes or gloss annotations. Traditionally, a hashiyah was written by students and scholars on a text while they were reading the text. The hashiya or ta’liqah often criticizes information and evaluates the strengths of the arguments in the text or its commentary.
| From the very moment you are in the cradle, like a baby who drinks milk, These stages follow each other, all the while. | از همان اول که در گهواره هستی شیر خوار این مراحل پشت هم طی می‌شود بی اختیار |
| Imitation Imitating, each child does like a parrot, so keen, Without thoughts, they act in every scene. | «تقلید» می‌کند تقلید، هر کودک چو طوطی، از همه ابتدا بی‌آنکه افکاری در او افتد به کار |
| Every time you hear a word, fresh and new, You wonder when they learned it, how they knew. | هر زمان از او تو بشنیدی کلام تازه‌ای با تعجب گفته باشی کی شده ضبط و نوار |
| This trait of imitation helps them grow, No need for mothers to teach, in class bestow. | باعث رشد و ترقی گشته این خصلت در او کی کند بهرِ سخن، مادر، کلاسی برقرار |
| Though it’s mimicry, it doesn’t mean They understand every word, every scene. | گرچه تقلیدیست، اما نیست معنایش که او هر کلامی بشنود، با فهم می‌بندد به کار |
| When you see these traits in the young, recognize It’s wisdom from the Creator, no disguise. | چون تو می‌بینی ز کودک این خصائص را، بدان سر زده افعالِ او از حکمت پروردگار |
| This learning through mimicry, in due course, Fits their age and time, a natural force. | این فراگیری تقلیدیِ او در عین حال با تناسب در زمان و سن خود آید به کار |
| When this stage is fully passed in humankind, They’ll leave parrot-like imitation behind. | هر زمان طی گشت کامل در بشر این مرحله پس ز هر تقلید طوطی وار گردد برکنار |
| Devotion After this, to their parents, they show devotion, Love establishes this heartfelt connection. | «تعبّد» بعد از این بر والدین خود تعبد می‌کند از محبت می‌نماید ارتباطی برقرار |
| From affection, if advice they hear from them, They’ll hang it on their ears like an earring, dear. | از سر الفت گر از آنها نصیحت بشنود پند را آویزد او بر گوش، همچون گوشوار |
| They worship anyone they see as trust, Just like a servant of the loving God, they must. | می‌پرستد او هر آن کس را که می‌داند امین چون کسی کز مهر باشد بنده‌ی پروردگار |
| This affection helps them understand, New lessons beyond measure, at hand. | این محبت ها برایش کارسازی می‌کند چون بیاموزد نکاتی تازه بیرون از شمار |
| Circles of trust expand, bit by bit, Towards peers, friends, and teachers they fit. | حلقه‌های اعتمادش کم‌کم افزون می‌شود سوی هم‌سال و رفیق مشفق و آموزگار |
| As they become their models in deed and word, They stand firm with their guidance heard. | پس چو آنها گشته‌اند الگوی او در فعل و حرف می‌شود با استعانت روی پایش استوار |
| Each stage must be passed one by one, Until false gods are clear, their deception done. | شرط این باشد که طی گردد مراحل یک به یک تا شود نزدت خداوندانِ کاذب آشکار |
| You live your life through these stages, and time, From past to present, leads you in rhyme. | بگذرانی عمر خود در این مراحل تا تو را از گذشته تا بدینجا می‌رساند روزگار |
| The Limits of Reason and Need for Guidance Now you reach the edge of reasoning, its start, Blind obedience falls apart. | «مرز تعقُّل و نیاز به راهنما» این زمان بر مرز و آغاز تعقل می‌رسی از تو طاعت‌های بی چون و چرا آید کنار |
| Though in body, age, and appearance you’re grown, Curb the illusion of adulthood you’ve known. | پس اگر در جسم و سنّ و ظاهرت هستی بزرگ نفس خود از وهمِ «من دیگر بزرگم» کن مهار |
| Though outwardly mature, inward remain a child, With thoughts of adulthood come the thought of retirement. | گرچه در ظاهر نه، در باطن ولیکن بچه ای از بزرگی حاصل آید مقصد و پایان کار |
| O children of Adam, you need a trusted guide, One who has wisdom and faith by their side. | ای بنی آدم تو محتاجی به شخص معتمد آن که دارد از لحاظ عقل و ایمان اعتبار |
| Understanding differs from mere capacity to perceive, Your sense of wisdom from a sage you’ll receive. | بس تفاوت دارد، استعداد فهمیدن ز فهم قوه‌ی فهمت ز ارشاد حکیم افتد به کار |
| Since our ignorance exceeds what we know, Seek a rightful guide to show the way to go. | چون که نادانیِ ما افزون زداناییِ ماست جستجو کن بهر خود صاحب طریقی حق‌مدار |
| Fortunate is one who reaches the wise, Kneels in student’s quest, with effort and tries. | ای خوش آن‌کس را که چون نزد بزرگی میرسد می‌زند زانوی شاگردی به سعی و پشتکار |
| But those who seek the path of perfection, On their journey, never halt for reflection. | لیک آن‌کس را که باشد رهرو راه کمال در طریق خود نگردد از توقف ماندگار |
| Mental illness stems from missing the measure, Of action’s worth and its rightful treasure. | سرّ امراض روانی در بشر این شد که او پی نبرد از کیف و کمّ حرکت و انجام کار |
| Sometimes famous in varied fields they are, Or content with mere titles, a name afar. | گاه بینی شد زبان‌زد در علوم مختلف یا که دل‌خوش گشته با عنوان و نام مستعار |
| Don’t get lost in the guise of science and knowledge, Though enjoying learning isn’t shameful at heart. | پس مبادا در لباس علم و دانش گم شوی گرچه لذت بردن از دانش نباشد ننگ و عار |
| If you wish to be free from blind devotion, Be patient, don’t force yourself into motion. | تو اگر خواهی شوی دور از تعبد مستقل بردباری کن مکن برخویش اصرار و فشار |
| If you rush, you’ll burn the meal you prepare, Hastening leaves your work incomplete, laid bare. | شعله چون بالا بری، باشی غذایی سوخته گر به تعجیل آمدی، کارِ تو ماند نیمه کار |
| Your path is tough, you’re just a beginner, Forget thoughts of having already been a winner. | راه تو باشد بسی دشوار و هستی مبتدی فکر «واصل گشته‌ام دیگر» رها کن تازه کار |
| If you deviate due to pride and vanity, You’ll sow seeds of loss and insanity. | هان اگر در انحراف آیی ز عجب و خود سری چون ز بذر کج همی آید زیانکاری به بار |
| Limits of Reason and Setting Goals Reason tells you, you’re free to choose your aim, Before this age, you had no choice to claim. | «مرز تعقل و تعیین هدف» عقل می‌گوید تو مختاری، هدف را برگزین قبل از این دوران نداری هرگز از خود اختیار |
| Ask yourself, “Where am I? Where will I reach?” What’s the point of all this eating and sleep? | پرسی از خود در کجا هستم؟ کجا خواهم رسید؟ این همه خوردن و یا خوابیدن آید بر چه کار؟! |
| Marriage, gaining knowledge, wealth, and more, Life’s repeated daily, what’s it all for? | ازدواج و کسب علم و مال و ثروت بهر چیست؟ زندگی گردیده تکراری به هر لیل و نهار |
| If goal-driven, fear not these profound queries, Self-knowledge answers them, clearing mysteries. | گر هدفمندی مترس از این سوالات مخوف چون ز علم خودشناسی پاسخش آید به کار |
| Oh, the wonder of humans at every age, Seeing themselves in these states, so clear. | ای عجب از این بشر زیرا که در هر سن و سال مطلقا خود را در این حالات بیند آشکار |
| From here begins the path of spiritual travel, In a state of wakefulness, alert, unravel. | زین پس اینجا باشد آغازِ رهِ سیر و سلوک چون روی درحالتی از یقظه، باشی هوشیار |
| Imagine the journey’s end at the start, Or the ultimate move will lack heart. | انتهای ره تصور کن تو در آغاز راه ورنه باشد حرکت غایی به دور از انتظار |
| Before this, you were happy, goal-free, Others bore the burden, not you, you see. | قبل از این چون طفل خوش بودی بدور از هر هدف دیگران بودند جای تو ز محنت بیقرار |
| If from understanding and wisdom you lack, In the grave, you’ll be shamed for what you slack. | گر ز فهم و معرفت اینجا بمانی بی نصیب می‌شوی در لیلة الدفن از جهالت شرمسار |
| Your outer form crumbles from life’s blows, To God’s court, bring a pure soul that glows. | صورت ظاهر به هم ریزد ز ضربه حادثه پس به درگاه الهی سیرت زیبا بیار |
| Within yourself lies the mirror of Divine light, See yourself, become a mirror bright. | در خودت آیینه ی انوار حق باشد نهان خود که در آیینه بینی، می‌شوی آیینه‌دار |
| After a lifetime, should your inner self show, Ask yourself who you are, why were you cloaked so? | پس مبادا بعدِ عمری چون هویدا شد درون بر خودت گویی که هستی؟ از چه بودی مستتار |
| Fear of loneliness stems from this truth, Never aligning with your inner youth. | سرِّ ترس و وحشت از تنهاییت این شد که تو با درون و باطنت هرگز نگشتی سازگار |
| If your goal isn’t clear, you’ll lose your way, Only God’s path, the right course will stay. | گر هدف روشن نباشد، راه خود گم می‌کنی راه هر ناحق روی، جز راه حق کردگار |
