Our Grade 1 students have been on an exciting and meaningful journey exploring the theme “Types of Communities.” Through a blend of classroom learning and real-world experiences, students discovered how communities work and the important role each person plays within them.
To deepen their understanding, students participated in a variety of engaging, hands-on learning opportunities. During their visit to the library, they explored how libraries serve as special community spaces where people read, learn, and share knowledge. This experience helped them appreciate the importance of quiet, shared environments and respect for others.
A special highlight of the unit was when a fire truck visited our school. Students were fascinated to learn about firefighters and their important role in keeping communities safe. They explored the equipment, asked thoughtful questions, and developed a deeper appreciation for community helpers.
Our trip to Scarborough Town Centre gave students a real-life look at a busy urban community. They observed how different stores and services come together to meet people’s needs, helping them understand how communities are organized and connected.
The visit to Legoland was another memorable experience, where students engaged in creative building challenges. This hands-on activity encouraged teamwork, imagination, and problem-solving while reinforcing how people work together to build strong communities.
Throughout the unit, students also engaged in project-based learning, hands-on activities, and presentations. These experiences allowed them to express their ideas, make connections, and build confidence as learners.
We also connected our learning to simple and meaningful Quranic teachings appropriate for our young learners. Students learned that Islam encourages us to be kind, helpful, and respectful members of our community. They discussed how helping others, sharing, and showing care are important values that help make communities strong and peaceful. These connections supported students in understanding that learning is not only about knowledge, but also about character and actions.
